New Exhibit: Southern Pilbara Rock Monitor

Southern Pilbara Rock Monitor

Now on display in the semi-arid desert area!

This is a rare species of dwarf monitor found only the steep rocky terrain of the Hammersley Ranges in Western Australia. It has razor sharp teeth for munching on prey such as insects and small vertebrates.

Look at that tail—it can be twice the length of the body! Why do you suppose it’s so long??

Funky Fact: This lizard has been identified as a separate species only since 2014!  We still have so much more to learn about our precious native wildlife….

Check out this little guy out in the big tank opposite the bilbies. Awesome!
